After tapping MIN-NANO for a colorful sneaker collaboration, Vans is now linking up with New York fashion designer Sandy Liang for a limited-edition collection of footwear, apparel and accessories. Inspired by her hometown of Bayside, Queens, her grandma and the hand-me-downs of her youth, Liang brings a style that embodies the “dreaminess of the nineties, as well as the grittiness of downtown New York City.”
Known for mixing prints, colors and fabrics, Liang updates five Vans Classic footwear styles in her bold yet playful aesthetic. The highlight of the collection is the Sandy Liang Era, which features a built-in ankle bracelet sewn directly into the pink velour upper. Inspired by a couch found in Liang’s Lower East Side studio, the Old Skool is dressed in the same pink velour and accented with crisscross chain detailing, while another iteration of the style boasts black canvas uppers and exposed white lock stitching. Rounding out the footwear options are Platform Slip-Ons in white snow leopard fur and the Vans Sport in canvas leopard and tartan plaid.
Buzzy New York designer Sandy Liang has announced her first-ever shoe collection, designed in collaboration with Vans. The range will also include select clothing and accessories, including a long-sleeve T-shirt, crossbody bag and bucket hat.The nine-piece apparel and accessories range reflects ’90s nostalgia through the use of bejeweled detailing, butterfly iconography and marbled colorways. Key apparel pieces include an oversized Sandy BF hoodie, snakeskin print bike shorts, a light pink jumpsuit and all-over polka dot print jacket. Accessories include a faux shearling crossbody bag and fanny pack with metal chain.
Liang brings her signature ’90s-inspired aesthetic to a fuzzy leopard-print iteration of Vans’ classic Slip-On. The Old-Skool is updated with zig-zag stitching, as well as Sandy Liang logo laces and butterfly graphics on the foxing. A teaser posted to Instagram also reveals a pink velvet Authentic adorned with iridescent beading and septum-like hardware. A plush sherpa crossbody features drawstring detailing and a co-branded patch, while a bucket hat arrives in grey snakeskin with a playful polka dot print. Lastly, a tie-dye crewneck is printed with Vans’ checker print down the sleeves.
The ’90s-infused, unisex range includes a fuzzy leopard-print version of Vans’ iconic Slip-On, as well as chain and gem-adorned velvet iterations of the Authentic. A halter top featuring a gemstone butterfly is a nostalgic nod to early-aughts aesthetics while a pink jumpsuit with silver studs down the side is sure to become an instant favorite. Accessories including a chain-decorated fanny pack and sherpa crossbody put a twist on classic styles.
The Sandy Liang x Vans collection will launch February 21 on Vans’ and Sandy Liang’s websites, as well as at select Vans retail locations. Between February 21 and March 15, The General by Vans retail location will launch an exclusive pop-up experience that will present the collaborative range alongside Liang’s ready-to-wear collection.
The collection, which will debut on Feb. 21, features Liang’s signature design approach—which has become known for mixing materials, colors, and print—to bring a bold, youthful take on five Vans Classic footwear styles in addition to apparel and accessories. According to an announcement from the brand, the designer drew inspiration from her hometown Bayside, Queens, her grandmother, and her hand-me-downs from her youth.
“To see my ideas come to life on such an iconic collection of footwear and apparel is a dream come true,” the designer said in a statement. “This collection embodies the playful dreaminess of the nineties, as well as the grittiness of downtown New York City.”
Thanks to Liang’s designs, each one of the footwear styles features key materials such as fleece-like cheetah print and metal jewelry embellishments. The Vans x Sandy Liang collection includes a nine-piece apparel and accessories capsule collection in addition to the five shoes, which is inspired by the ‘90s.
To celebrate the Vans x Sandy Liang collection, an exclusive pop-up shopping experience will be open at The General by Vans retail location at 102 N. 6th St. Brooklyn in New York. Customers will be able to shop the collection as well as pieces from Liang’s ready-to-wear collection from her eponymous line.
The Vans x Sandy Liang collection ranges from 14 USD to 199 USD and will be available online at both Vans’ and Sandy Liang’s websites and at select Vans locations.
